High drama at Midlothian Council chamber saw the SNP-led administration keep leisure facilities open, but only with the help of one rogue Labour councillor.
In a vote that went down to the wire, Midlothian Councillors decided to save the eight buildings threatened with closure and press on with plans to build a replacement Newbattle High School and community hub in Mayfield.
The move was slammed by members of the opposition Labour Group and question marks remain over the long-term viability of the council-run community facilities in Newtongrange, Gorebridge and Mayfield.
Speaking to a packed council chamber, Councillor Jim Muirhead (Lab) said: “I support the concept of the hub but our position is that we cannot vote for it.
“If we vote for the hub and to keep the community facilities, then I have no doubt that those facilities will eventually close.”
