Futuristic fingerprint technology could be coming to high school canteens across the county – prompting fears of “big brother” type surveillance.
Midlothian Council has agreed to launch a consultation into the biometric option contained with its “Cashless Catering” system.
Secondary schools have used the system – in which pupils pay for lunches using a swipe card or PIN – since 2003.
However, fingerprint technology contained with the system has so far not been used.
