Eskbank fitness studio appeal upheld

A fitness company owner has been granted permission to move her business from Dalkeith town centre to an industrial estate at Eskbank.

In May this year, Pulse Pilates and Fitness Studio boss Janice Paterson’s bid to change the use of Unit 30/3 at Hardengreen Industrial Estate from office/light industry (class 4) to fitness studio (class 11) was knocked back by planning officers.

But at a hearing of the council’s Local Review Body (LRB) last week, the move was shown the green light by elected members.

Councillor Lisa Beattie (SNP) said: “This is an appeal that bears a lot of merit. It ticks a lot of this council’s priorities in terms of wellbeing, economic development, training opportunities and positive destinations. I can see a considerable number of reasons that outweigh the case officer’s concerns.”

Concerns had been that the proposal would result in a purpose-built business unit being used for non-industrial activity.
