Thirteen members of a Midlothian taekwondo club picked up a haul of medals while representing Scotland at the European Championships.

The team brought home nine gold, ten silver and 14 bronze medals from the event, held recently in Budapest.

Catherine Divine is leader of Elite Taekwondo Scotland - Midlothian, which trains at Dalkeith Campus and Lasswade Centre. She was delighted with her students’ efforts.

She said: “Every time they go away they just do fantastic.

“They have been training hard. We have had really hard squad sessions for the national team. Specifically competition training. Coming up to a competition we do six months, sometimes a year before. We get everyone together and that’s where we do all our squad training in a hall that we hire out specifically for competitions.

“For the European Championships, for the last six months, every Sunday, we get together for three hours to do specifically hard cardio combat training.

“To be honest with you, I didn’t think they would come back with as many medals as they did. That’s probably the best they have ever done.

“They have been really fantastic and trained so hard.

“It’s a strong team and they have all worked really well together. It’s really fantastic.

“I’m so proud of them.

“They have fantastic sportsmanship, great camaraderie.

“They got on well with all the other teams. It’s probably the best international competition we have been to.”

Catherine revealed that the Euro stars now have the opportunity to take on the best in the world, after qualifying for big events next year.

She said: “It’s now just about building on this.

“They have now been invited to the World Championships and intercontinental competitions, both next year.

“We think the Worlds are to be held in Ireland. And the intercontinental will be in America.

“They are all getting excited already. As we just had an absolute ball in Budapest.

“It was hard work but they had a great time. They made so many new friends.”
