The SNP-led administration has vowed that no buildings will close as part of plans for Newbattle High School, despite officer recommendations.
The council’s director of education Don Ledingham unveiled the verdict of the controversial consultation into the proposals as the Advertiser went to press on Tuesday.
He said that council officials’ recommendations were that Gorebridge keeps its leisure centre and library. Newtongrange would keep its library and community learning centre, but lose the swimming pool and the leisure centre. In Mayfield the leisure centre and library would close.
But, in a final twist in the tale, council leader Bob Constable (SNP) issued a statement which said: “The administration are actually taking the view that nothing is going to shut.
“No member of the administration will vote to close facilities.”
