Two people have died and another man remains in a serious condition in hospital after an accident north of Pathhead this morning.
Three vehicles were involved in the crash on the A68 at 3:15am.
A man and woman in the same vehicle died at the scene and another man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The A68 was closed between Salters Road and the Millerhill junction, with local diversions in place.
Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash to contact them.
Inspector Neil Mitchell based at Dalkeith Police Station said: “A man and a woman travelling in the same vehicle were sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
“Another man has been transferred to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he remains in a serious condition.
“The A720 city bypass remains open however the A68 approach road has been closed in both directions between A68 Salters Road junction and A68 Millerhill junction. It is expected to remain closed for several hours while collision investigation work is carried out.
“Local diversions are in place and our inquiries into the full set of circumstances are ongoing.
“I wish to thank motorists and members of the local community for their cooperation and patience while we carry out this vital work.
“I also appeal to anyone who was travelling in the area and who witnessed this collision to contact police immediately on 101 if not already done so.”
