A road safety awareness day was recently held at Edinburgh College’s Midlothian campus.
Billy McOwen,an automotive lecturer at the college, approached fire training officer Ian Mckenzie concerned with the high number of young drivers killed or seriously injured on Scottish roads. It was agreed that his students would benefit from a road safety awareness day.
The day started with Ian delivering a presentation to 54 first-year automotive students, and was followed by a practical demonstration consisting of air bag deployment and a simulated road traffic collision. Paramedics provided a practical demonstration on how the ambulance service would respond at an incident.
Due to the positive feedback from students and staff the college has asked both services if they are prepared to make this an annual event.
