Controversial plans for a major tourist village at Fordel have moved a step closer – despite officials’ recommendations it be refused.

Dalkeith-based Oakridge Property’s bid for a tourist retail outlet, visitor centre and hotel on the A68 was considered in principle by Midlothian Council last week.

Planning officials had suggested the application be refused for a number of reasons – including the proposed site being greenfield land in the open countryside, that the hotel would be “incongruous” in its setting and that the retail operation could pose a “significant threat” to Midlothian’s town centres, particularly Dalkeith.
