Former Provost, councillor and Freeman of Midlothian Sam Campbell has died at the age of 85 following a short battle with cancer.

Family and colleagues paid tribute to the Danderhall representative who contributed to local government at local, national and international level.

Kenny Campbell (56), a tour operations manager for Edinburgh Bus Tours, said his father’s death had left an “irreplaceable void” in the lives of those who knew and loved him.

Councillor Adam Montgomery, himself a former provost, hailed the passing of one of the “best-known councillors in Scotland” while Midlothian Council described him as a “stalwart in his community.”
