Their romance blossomed in the aftermath of the Hungarian revolution, and they faced trials and tribulations.

But Dalkeith couple David and Edit Smith have not looked back since their marriage 50 years ago.

David (81) and Edit (73), of Hunt Close, recently celebrated their golden wedding with family and friends at Dalhousie Castle, Bonnyrigg.

David was serving with Dalkeith Town Council in 1956 when he met Hungarian refugees who came to the Middleton camp after the country’s revolt against the government – one of whom was a young girl called Kornelia.

Two years later, he went to Hungary and in difficult circumstances managed to visit the home of Kornelia. It was there he met his wife to be – Kornelia’s best friend, Edit Rago.
