Repairs to a damaged high pressure gas main in Newtongrage continued on Tuesday as the Advertiser went to press, almost a week after the damage was first discovered.
Engineers from gas distribution network company SGN have been on site at Newbattle Road since the gas main was damaged by a contractor on Wednesday, January 6.
Hannah Adam, spokesperson for SGN, said: “We are building a by-pass around the damaged section of pipe and anticipate this will be in place by the end of this week. This will allow us to replace the damaged section of the existing pipe which we expect to take another few days.
“We’d like to assure the local community there’s no risk from the gas escape which has occurred from the damage and our engineers continue to monitor this closely in consultation with the emergency services and local authorities.
“We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and thank road users and local residents for their continued patience. We are doing everything we can to complete our work as quickly as possible and will continue to provide updates on our website sgn.co.uk.”
A road closure has been put in place between the roundabouts at Newbattle Gardens and Bryans Road and a signed diversion route is in place.
