Rugby World Cup: Opening Ceremony (ITV, 6.45pm, Friday, September 18)

John Inverdale introduces live coverage of the curtain-raiser ahead of the eighth staging of the Rugby World Cup, which takes place at Twickenham.

A performance with the theme of “Breaking New Ground” retells the history of the sport from the beginning, including the moment at Rugby School in 1823 when William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it. Jonny Wilkinson, Lawrence Dallaglio and Clive Woodward provide analysis, commentary is by Nick Mullins.

Rick Stein: From Venice to 
Istanbul (BBC2, 9.30pm)

The chef’s gastronomic road trip reaches a conclusion as he arrives in Istanbul, just in time for the bluefish season.

This allows him the chance to enjoy a fishing expedition on the Bosphorus, which is one of the world’s most strategic waterways, and divides the city between two 
continents.

Rick also cooks two much-loved local dishes – lavish kofte kebabs with pistachios, and kapuska, a hearty traditional Turkish cuisine stew that comes from the Black Sea region, whose name is derived from the Russian word for cabbage.
