THE communities with local facilities under threat have urged Midlothian Council to consider a fifth option for the replacement Newbattle High School.
Marian Tytler of Gorebridge Cares said she was in favour of a fifth scenario: “The closure of the facilities should be taken off the table and the council should build a new like-for-like school with capacity to add a community hub at a later stage if finances pick up.
“The council should then tap into the momentum that has been created within communities to work with groups to provide improved facilities for each of the communities affected by the closures.”
Speaking at the council’s third and final public consultation meeting in Mayfield, Gail Quinn, vice chairman of Newbattle Community Learning Centre’s committee, urged officials to listen to the community regarding ‘scenario five’.
Under plans to rebuild Newbattle High School at Mayfield Complex, Midlothian Council has put forward proposals to close eight community facilities in Newtongrange, Gorebridge and Mayfield.
