Five eight-a-side ladies teams competed for the Royal Hotel Shield last week at Penicuik Park, as part of the Penicuik Hunter and Lass Festival.

The final was decided by a thrilling penalty shootout, won 3-0 by Craigiebield Hotel after they drew 2-2 with Penicuik Athletic under 14 girls’ team.

Penicuik Lass 2016 Kerry Wilson was part of the Hunter’s Lasses side with took part, and she thoroughly enjoyed the tournament.

She said: “I absolutely loved it. I didn’t think I would but I did. I have never played football before and didn’t know the rules.

“But it wasn’t so much about the winning, just taking part and having fun.

“Our side was mostly ex Lasses, as well as my niece and the Hunter William’s partner.

“We had no practice at all before the tournament.

“Last year’s Hunter, Colin Hawkins, is a football coach, and he offered to coach us but we didn’t take him up on that, we probably should have!

“But it was brilliant fun. There was a lot of people there to watch which was great. It was lovely to see a lot of family there. I think the team that won it, Craigiebield, were really good. They were running circles around us!

“But all in all I really enjoyed it. It was a great event.

“Hopefully we get a better response next year, as it is so much fun.

“It would be good to see more teams take part.”

The other sides that competed for the Royal Hotel Shield this year were the Royal Hotel and the Crown Inn.

Also taking to the field were Penicuik Athletic’s under 13s and under 11 sides who played out a friendly match ahead of the final.
