Councillors have shown the green light for Morrisons to build a supermarket on the site of the former First Bus depot in Dalkeith.
Consent for similar plans have been in place since June 2007 after site owner Forrest Developments submitted an application for a 26,000sq ft store.
Welcoming the news, Councillor Margo Russell (Lab) said: “This is a boom for the town. No disrespect to Lidl or Farmfoods, but the people of Dalkeith have been crying out for a big supermarket in the town.
“I’m sure that a Morrisons will boost local trade at that end of the street.
“I’ve spoken to a few shopkeepers and they are confident it will bring more business into the area – and with a bus stop right outside, the people of Woodburn can jump on a number 39 and go down to get their shopping.”
Development Executive for Morrisons, Richard Bakes said: “Great news and another important step towards the delivery of this much-needed facility in Dalkeith.”
