Lloyds Bank last week announced that it is to close the Bank of Scotland branch in Gorebridge among a programme of 400 closures.
Local MSP Christine Grahame (SNP) has raised concerns about the closure of the Main Street branch, with the closest Bank of Scotland four miles away in Dalkeith.
She said: “I understand that many people are increasingly moving away from in branch banking, however it is important to remember that some people are not able to do so. A phoneline for calls or internet is not free after all. In addition, local businesses still require to bank cash personally. I have been informed that customers’ accounts will be transferred to their nearest branch in either Dalkeith, Galashiels or Penicuik, which could mean a significant journey for some, and if you don’t drive then public transport is not exactly handy.
“I am seeking reassurance that appropriate steps will be taken to ensure such customers are able to access the banking services they need.”
She added that services provided through the Post Office and mobile branches are “not the most reliable”.
Lloyds said the closures were the result of fewer branch transactions.
