Monktonhall First Aid Colliery, based in Gorebridge, recently held a celebration to mark 50 years service by one of its members, former miner Peter Reid (78).
He said: “I still enjoy it. I can still help out but I don’t go every week now. I’ve loved being involved. I could write a book as far as my good memories of first aid are concerned. “But we are not getting as much volunteers as we used to. There is too much paperwork involved now which puts people off I think. It’s all wrong, it’s ridiculous really, we need people who know how to do first aid.” The group returns from its summer break on August 19 at 6.30pm and then meets weekly at Gorebridge Primary.
