Two Midlothian housing developments have been named in the UK’s top 50 affordable housing projects.

Midlothian Council’s new £5 million 48-home development at New Park Gardens in Gorebridge and Dalkeith-based Melville Housing Association’s £16.5 million 133-home scheme at Langlaw Road in Mayfield were the only two Scottish developments to make the list drawn up by a panel of industry experts organised by Inside Housing magazine.

The Gorebridge development is one of the latest to be completed in the council’s new social housing programme which has seen around 900 houses built at 17 sites across the county.

The development has a beautiful setting, looking across fields to the Pentland Hills, an aspect not lost on the judges, who commented; “This is an example of a Scottish local authority using its own land to create much needed homes in a stunning location.”

Reflecting the area’s industrial history, the development also incorporates community art consisting of mining machinery previously used at the nearby Newtongrange colliery.
