Newtongrange Councillor Catherine Johnstone has been elected as the new leader of Midlothian Council.

The grandmother of two replaces Councillor Owen Thompson, who has formally resigned from the local authority.

Mr Thompson was elected as Midlothian’s new MP last month.

The date of the resulting by-election will be set by the Returning Officer.

Councillor Johnstone said: “It’s a huge privilege, an honour and a great responsibility to take on this post. I will do it to the best of my ability for the people of Midlothian.”
