A wall of colour now welcomes people to Mayfield after a 60 metre long mural representing the community was unveiled last weekend.
The Mayfield Big Wall at Blackcot (between the doctor’s surgery and the Shell garage) is awash with colour after the mural, loosely based on the local gala day, was installed last Friday and officially unveiled on Saturday.
Artist Chris Rutterford, has spent the past year working with hundreds of local children from nursery to high-school age, and he is delighted with the results.
He said: “Apart from keeping everything to scale and maintaining some semblance of a narrative throughout the mural, I chose to give the children and young people free-reign. This is their project as much as it is mine.
“Many of them will be walking past their art on their way to school for years to come, and this is a great way for them to experience ownership and pride in their work, and also in their community.”
