A COMMUNITY garden has been vandalised within a week of volunteers starting planting.

Volunteer Ellie Cairns (36) said several of the 264 trees planted at McLean Place in Gorebridge earlier this month had been knocked over, but that there was no lasting damage done.

The project at McLean Place in Gorebridge has also come under fire from community councillors, but volunteers insist that locals are enthusiastic about the project.

Mrs Cairns said more local residents were getting involved as the plans developed.

“Originally we got plans saying it was going to be the whole area and we thought it was going to block off our access so we went to a meeting and realised it was smaller. That’s when we decided to get involved.

“Some of the older people in the street came along and planted trees the first day and more neighbours are asking about it now. Since we started we’ve not had any bother from anybody – nobody has come up and objected to it.”
