Hopes rise for Bonnyrigg Leisure Centre

Efforts to halt the proposed demolition of Bonnyrigg Leisure Centre have gained momentum after it was claimed that the building could be made “usable” for as little as £30,000.

Situated at King George V Park, it features a swimming pool and back hall for community use and other facilities.

At a council meeting in February 2010, it - along with Bonnyrigg Community Library, Poltonhall Outdoor Bowling Club, Bonnyrigg Town Hall and Poltonhall Community Centre - was earmarked for ‘disposal’ ahead of the opening of the new Lasswade Hub in August 2013.

In 2008, an independent condition survey estimated that it would cost £92,000 to bring the building up to scratch.

Local man Darius Namdaran is of the view that ‘disposal’ should not mean ‘demolish’, and wants the building to be given a 12-month stay of execution.

Presenting a copy of the 2008 survey at a recent meeting of Bonnyrigg and Lasswade Community Council, he told members that £70,000 of the estimate was for cosmetic repairs.
