Independence debate heats up in Midlothian

Alex Salmond’s announcement that the Scottish people will, in autumn 2014, decide the future of their nation, has sparked fierce debate both north and south of the border, with the First Minister’s words igniting a political battle over the timing and format of an independence referendum.

Prime Minister David Cameron has said he wants a referendum “as soon as possible”, but Mr Salmond has announced his preferred timing to be the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn.

At Midlothian Council, SNP group leader Owen Thompson has “no doubt” that Scotland would be better of as an independent nation.
