Flooding has wreaked havoc throughout Midlothian with almost a month’s rain falling in just 21 hours.

Motorists were rescued from their vehicles on Saturday as roads were flooded by up to a foot of water.

According to the Met Office, a total of 42.8ml of rain fell between 6pm on Friday, July 6 and 3pm the following day. The average monthly rainfall for July is 56.7ml.

In Lasswade, staff at the Paper Mill bar and restaurant watched in amazement as a blue Nissan car floated down the River North Esk. It had been parked in a car park next to the river just moments earlier.
