Lasswade High School pupils Jack Stewart, Paul Davidson and Euan Davidson have won the inaugural Taste of Midlothian Schools competition.

The competition, sponsored by Macsween in Loanhead, was open to all S3/S4 classes, with pupils asked to design a starter or dessert using local or regional produce, considering seasonality of ingredients and healthy eating guidelines.

The boys’ prize was to have their winning ‘Wee Pot of Berry Nice Trifle’ served as the dessert at the Food & Drink Awards Dinner. To perfect their dish, which used fruit from a local fruit farm, dairy from Bonaly Farm Dairies and locally-grown edible flowers, the boys were mentored by Alan Gorrie from Deli-licious Catering.

Runners-up were Chloe Stuart and Hazel Reid from Newbattle High School, who were mentored by Gerry Goldwyre who runs Midlothian’s Watertower
Restaurant.
