Labour hit out over Midlothian Council HQ plan

Plans to build a council and police headquarters on the site of the former Dalkeith High School have been ridiculed.

Addressing a recent meeting of Dalkeith Community Council, Councillor Alex Bennett (Lab) poured scorn on the idea of housing around 2,300 council staff under one roof at Newmills Road.

He said: “I read that in the press and I couldn’t believe it because I have never heard anything like it in my life. For starters, police are merging into a single Force, so why would they want to build new premises there?

“And where would they get the money for a new council building?”
