lasswade High’s head boy and girl have been given a first glimpse of the inside of their new school.

Along with depute head Rosemary Mitchell, S6 pupils Ryan Brown and Olivia Bird were given a guided tour of the £37.1m campus by Jeff Thornton, project manager with main contractor BAM Construction.

Ryan said afterwards: “You get such a sense now of the real scale of the place – it’s huge, but it’s also not intimidating in any way. Just the opposite – it seems a really inviting space and somewhere where you want to come and learn.”

Olivia seemed just as impressed. She said: “It looks fantastic, even better than we thought.”

Work on a vast gymnastics academy, library, classrooms, dance studio, main entrance and 25m, six-lane swimming pool are well underway.

The roof and external walls are all but complete and teams of workers are fitting the electrics, heating and plumbing.

The new Lasswade community hub will replaceexisting facilities and community services brought under one building. The first phase of the community campus is on schedule to open in autumn 2013.
