The Cross Keys Hotel and Tolbooth buildings in Dalkeith are the latest in a string of properties to benefit from cash awarded through the town centre regeneration scheme.

As the Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) and Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) project nears the end of its third year, by which stage all grant schemes must be agreed, the pair of historic buildings have received significant grant aid.

Project manager Rod Lugg said: “The Tolbooth has suffered some unsympathetic repair work in the past with hard cement render being smeared over the face of the ashlar stones on the front elevation.
