GOWKLEY MOSS ROUNDABOUT, north of Penicuik: Various roadside tributes follow fatal road accidents. Community council says it's tantamount to litter.

Roadside tributes to people who have died in crashes have been dubbed “tantamount to litter”.

Derek Cosens, chairman of Penicuik Community Council, made his remark during a debate on the proliferation of flowers and football tops near Gowkley Moss roundabout.

Community councillors are calling for a time limit on such tributes.

There are currently three roadside memorials, with a variety of tributes to young men who have died on this stretch of the A701.

Discussing the sensitive issue last week, Mr Cosens agreed it was a “difficult” topic.

Treasurer Andy Gardner said the tributes created their own hazard acting as a distraction to passing motorists. “It is dangerous having them at the side of the road.”
