Anger at Midlothian care charges plan

Disabled people in Midlothian will lose their freedom and dignity through a shake-up of charging for vital support services, it has been claimed.

Forward Mid, a service-user led disabled forum for Midlothian, made the comments after Midlothian Council Cabinet agreed to change its fees for residential and non-residential services in line with guidance issued by the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA).

Vulnerable

As a result, vulnerable and disabled people may have to pay towards services such as day care and respite breaks, subject to their income.

But the council insists no one will be worse off under the plans.

He described Midlothian Council’s plans to disregard 20 of earned income – the minimum amount recommended by COSLA - as removing any incentive to work.
