Battle to save Penicuik's John Chant Centre

Opposition is growing to plans to close a Penicuik centre for adults with learning difficulties.

It has been claimed that church halls could be used as community hubs – replacements for the John Chant Centre, which is to close as part of Midlothian Council's modernisation of day services.

The council claims the move will also save 94,000 a year, but parents of service users have questioned the true cost of the programme.

They also fear the closure will have a knock on effect on those using the Cherry Road Resource Centre, Bonnyrigg.

Councillor Jack Aitchison (Lab), Midlothian Council's cabinet member for social work, said: "We have reached the point where we cannot afford to progress day service modernisation while operating two centres."
