They may jokingly call themselves the ‘BAGS’, but the women of Bilston Activities Group know how to rustle up a campaign.

What started off two years ago as a much-needed group for parents to try out new activities has transformed into an action group dedicated to improving the village.

Since its formation, the activities group has launched a regular village newsletter, and its most recent success is securing funding from WREN, the landfill tax body, to allow Midlothian Council to improve an unofficial pathway.

An audit by the council’s community learning and development division identified a need for a group in the village where parents could meet up and try new experiences. In its early days, the group enjoyed sessions including paediatric first aid, origami, personal safety, meditation and confidence building.

Joan Acton, a CLD officer who works closely with the activities group, said: “I think, for me, the most significant moment was at the end of the first term. We sat around and they came up with the idea to try a newsletter. They wanted to give something back to the community.”
