Bonnyrigg councillor’s funding reform bid hits buffers

Midlothian’s two main political parties have put the kybosh on a Green councillor’s bid to reform the way elected members receive funding.

Councillors are allocated £15,000 a year to be spent within their own ward on environmental improvements or community projects, with unused funding carried forward indefinitely.

Ian Baxter, who represents the Bonnyrigg ward, is concerned that members could amass a £75,000 pot over five years, and use this to influence voting at elections.

But his proposal to instead pool and distribute the funding to community groups has failed to win any support among Labour or the SNP. Without someone to second his motion, Councillor Baxter is unable to make a case before the full council.
