Bonnyrigg’s new cherry trees are not so poplar

Council landscaping at the north-east entrance to Bonnyrigg has split opinion among residents.
The planting of five cherry trees has angered some objectors who say the works at Eskbank Road are a waste of money.
But other neighbours have welcomed the move to visually improve the area.
The cherry trees replace larger poplars taken down in 2011.
Citing safety concerns, a handful of residents succesfully campaigned to have them removed.
One homeowner, who does not wish to be indentified, is furious that the trees have been planted outside his home.
He told the Advertiser: “I battled to get rid of the other trees for years. They were right outside our house and at 40ft, they were dangerous during high winds. We have just got rid of one problem and now there is another. I’m at the end of my tether and upset that we have not been consulted, because we don’t want any trees at the front of our house.”
