Burns trophy tribute

Cllr Muirhead hands over the Jim Dunsmuir Robert Burns trophy to Gorebridge Primary School headteacher Gillian Grant

Cllr Muirhead hands over the Jim Dunsmuir Robert Burns trophy to Gorebridge Primary School headteacher Gillian Grant

A ROBERT Burns trophy has been presented to a primary school in memory of a former local councillor.

Jim Dunsmuir, who died in December 2011, was first elected to Midlothian Council in May 1999, representing the Gorebridge ward until 2007.

Born in Cumnock, Jim was a huge fan of fellow Ayrshire man Robert Burns. And now Gorebridge Community Council have donated a trophy to Gorebridge Primary School in the former councillor and famous poet’s names, to be awarded to pupils for their poetry and songs.

Eddie Robertson, secretary of the Gorebridge Community Council said: “What we wanted to do was name a street after Jim Dunsmuir, as they used to do that for councillors. But they don’t do that now.

“So we asked local people to suggest something else we could do in his memory.

“Jim was a great Burns man so we thought it would be appropriate to have a Burns trophy in his name.”
