Call to save Midlothian toilets is 1,500-strong

Signed by more than 1500 locals, a petition to prevent town centre toilets from closing is to be brought before the council’s newly-formed Petitions Committee.

The future of five town centre toilets – in Dalkeith, Bonnyrigg, Gorebridge, Penicuik and Loanhead – are under a council review, with administration councillors suggesting alternative facilities, such as those in pubs and cafes, be used instead.

Campaigners to save the toilets now hope a case will be heard before the Petition Committee.

Dalkeith man Kenny Young, who submitted the petition on behalf of the 1564 people who signed up, said: “It tells you how strongly people feel about this that so many have signed up to save the toilets so quickly.

“With so many people making their voices heard through the petition, I think everyone who has signed it will hope that the council will seriously listen.”
