A petition to save Midlothian’s public toilets from closure has attracted more than 1,000 signatures.

Launched by Midlothian Council’s opposition Labour Group, the campaign is against plans by the SNP administration to save £117,000 each year by closing loos in Penicuik, Bonnyrigg, Dalkeith, Gorebridge and Loanhead.

The council intends to offer cash to businesses that are willing to open their toilets to the public.

Councillor Ian Baxter (Green), is firmly behind the move: “Seeing how the proposed scheme works in Perth and Kinross and Aberdeenshire Councils, I am convinced that not only will this save money, but it will help local businesses and will offer better facilities to the public.”

Public toilets, according to the council, will not be closing until alternative locations have been assessed for their suitability.
