Car park turbine approved at Penicuik Tesco
A ten-metre high wind turbine is to be built at Tesco's Penicuik store, despite reservations from nearby residents.
At a recent meeting of Midlothian Council's planning committee, members agreed to the application which would see the grey steel turbine erected in the supermarket's car park.
The design has two rotors, one on top of the other, which rotate horizontally – unlike conventional turbines, which resemble aircraft propellers.
The local authority received 11 identical letters of objection from residents in Edinburgh Road.
They feared the close proximity of the turbine to homes would be visually intrusive, detrimental to the occupier's amenity and to the value of their property.
Objectors added the turbine would have a negative impact on the town's beauty and result in an "industrial" feel.
The application was approved on the condition the colour of the turbines and knee rail match the colour of the existing grey lampposts and that the development begins within five years from the date of the permission.
