Change fears played down

MIDLOTHIAN Council has reacted to fears over proposed changes to how community councils run.

The Draft Midlothian Scheme for community councils was sent out to all the community councils in Midlothian proposing changes to the way they and their federation operate. The council asked for any feedback by March 12.

Newtongrange Community Council chairman Jason Ferry was worried by the plans.

He said: “I feel that this is transferring a lot of power from community councils to Midlothian Council, which I’m not too happy about.”

A council spokesman said: “The new draft proposals are actually an increase for the Federation in terms of being recognised, as they have been given a formal role with Midlothian Council’s Community Planning partnership.”
