Community facilities fear

FEARS are growing that the three communities served by Newbattle High could lose local facilities when the new school is built.

Many of those who attended the ‘Newbattle 2016’ consultation events in Mayfield, Newtongrange and Gorebridge, spoke of facilities such as swimming pools and libraries being centralised at the new school.

Newtongrange Community Council chairman Jason Ferry spoke of his concerns after attending a consultation event: “I had to check that we were there to talk about a school as they were going on about other community facilities.

“There will be centralisation of some community resources.

“If the facilities we have here were moved from Newtongrange it would leave us with a huge gap in the middle of the village.”

The Advertiser asked the council whether community facilities were under threat amid plans for the new school. The response was that nothing had been decided ahead of a special council meeting on February 26.
