Community hall closes

A CUT to grant funding has forced the “end of an era” for a community building in Gorebridge.

The Brown Building is run by the Gorebridge Community Development Trust - which was rocked by the news at Christmas that they would no longer receive vital salary funding from the council-managed Fairer Scotland fund.

Although £14,000 was found in donations from council departments, this is someway short of the £47,000 needed.

Therefore, at their monthly meeting on Monday (January 14), the Trustees of Gorebridge Community Development Trust reluctantly decided to close the Brown Building in Gorebridge on February 27.

Trust Manager David Thomas said: “This decision is the end of an era. I would like to thank everyone past and present who has contributed to keeping the building open and operational.

“Due to the recent challenges in our Trust grant funding we are no longer able to support the costs associated with managing this former Victorian primary school.

“I am very disappointed over this outcome having spent three years nursing this facility and keeping it open through the worst two winters in living memory.

“The Brown Building has provided a home for several community groups for whom who we are actively seeking a new home.”

Work on a new £2.7m Community Hub for Gorebridge delivered by the trust is still expected to begin at the end of the month, with the project fully funded.
