Council blocks pay-day lenders

MIDLOTHIAN Council is to block public access to pay-day money lending websites on its network, including in libraries.

At last week’s Special Meeting Councillor Jim Muirhead (Lab) put forward the motion in a bid to stop people getting into spiralling debt.

He said: “In the current economic climate more and more families see their finances stretched and find themselves in situations where they need a loan to get them through to the next pay cheque.”

Councillor Owen Thompson (SNP) said: “We need to do what we can to make sure we can help. I think promoting and working with credit unions is the way to go.”

Members approved Councillor Muirhead’s motion.
