DALKEITH High’s recently-appointed head teacher has been closely examining successful comparator schools in Scotland in a bid to emulate their success.

In particular, attention has been focused on St Luke’s High School in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, where 35 per cent of pupils managed to gain three or more Highers in 2011, despite around 20 per cent of the students receiving free meals.

Colin Gerrie (42), who took up his post just five months ago, explained: “The challenge at Dalkeith is that we have a cross-section of society.

“We have good attainment – we are doing a lot of what St Luke’s is doing and we are getting it right, however the question we should be asking is, what are we already doing well that we could do slightly better?”
