Debate over Dalkeith parking permit idea
Mitchell Street, Dalkeith
The introduction of a parking permit scheme in Dalkeith would depend entirely on whether residents want one, says Midlothian Council.
The council has unveiled plans for a public consultation on the subject.
But it is at pains to point out that no decision has been made yet.
In central Dalkeith, where parking spaces have been at a premium since pay and display charges were introduced at the North Wynd car park in July 2011, residents’ reaction to the permit idea has been surprisingly warm.
Glebe Street homeowner Marion Fyvie (62) said: “I think it would be good because a lot of people park here and then take the bus into town.
“As a result, quite often residents can’t find a space for themselves. When I recently had a new bathroom fitted the tradesman had a real job trying to get parked on the street.”
Rhona Banks (55), also of Glebe Street, added: “This street is horrific for parking – it’s used as a public car park.
“Drivers will arrive in three or four cars and then climb into the one vehicle before heading off. It is sickening trying to get parked on this street.”
