Finlay Wild wins his first Carnethy 5 Hill Race

FIRST-TIME Carnethy 5 entrant Finlay Wild won the 43rd staging of the race around the Pentland Hills on Saturday.

The Lochaber runner took first place in a record field of 535, which included 115 runners from the local club. Wild had to work hard to get the best of five-time winner Rob Jebb (Bingley), who ran with him to the top of Carnethy and kept trying to break away.

In the end, it was Wild’s superb descending skills off the summit that won the race for him by almost a minute. Perhaps he had been having special coaching about the course from clubmate Jimmy Jardine, who completed his 43rd race.

Third place went to another runner from south of the border, Mark Addison (Helm Hill Runners), with Carnethy captain Andy Fallas in a superb fourth place.

Angela Mudge (Carnethy) won the women’s race for an amazing 14th time and was also the first over-40 runner to reach the finishing line.

Amazingly, she recorded exactly the same time, to the nearest second, that she did in winning last year’s women’s event.

This year she was the only female to get under the hour, with the next two, Sarah McCormack (Moorfoots) and Charlotte Morgan (Carnethy) battling to the line, seconds apart and seconds over the hour.
