Firework warning to Midlothian traders

MIDLOTHIAN retailers are being reminded to ensure fireworks are sold and stored safely.

Trading Standards officials at Midlothian Council are advising shopkeepers to be aware of the strict rules on firework sales in the run-up to Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night.

These include obtaining a registration to store and sell fireworks; storing them safely and far away from sources of ignition; verifying the age of customers (who must be 18); displaying a prominent sign to confirm the age restriction; and displaying leaflets featuring the Firework Code.

Fireworks must be sold in manufacturers’ packed sets and not taken out to be sold separately. Only some sparklers and some larger individual devices may be sold unpacked. Councillor Owen Thompson (SNP), cabinet member for trading standards, said: “Our experience is that most local retailers are responsible and conform to the law.

“The message to retailers who break the law is clear – you will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal and could face prosecution, a heavy fine and even potential imprisonment.”
