Former Dalkeith High School demolished
With the long-awaited demolition of the former Dalkeith High School now just about complete, the site is gearing up for a new future.
The demolition contractor, Central Demolition Ltd, started clearing the area at the town’s Newmills Road last year and is due to finish all works by early next month.
The site is expected to attract interest for new developments.
A draft development brief that suggested potential new uses for the site was issued in the summer of last year for public consultation. The council is considering the responses with a view to finalising its ‘masterplan’ for the site. If all goes to plan, building on the site is expected to begin in 2013.
Councillor Russell Imrie, Cabinet Member for planning and development, said: “We are now at a new phase in the site’s positive contribution to community life.”
The former school has stood empty since 2003, after being replaced by the £30m Dalkeith Schools Community Campus.
Dalkeith High School was one of three schools brought together in the pioneering campus.
