French visit marks 30 years of friendship with Penicuik

The Entente Cordiale continues to flourish between Penicuik and its French twin town.

The Midlothian town welcomes a party from L'Isle sur la Sorgue as the twinning link celebrates its 30th anniversary.

In recognition of the milestone, there will be an official ceremony in Penicuik Town Hall on the evening of Sunday August 17 when representatives of both towns will reaffirm the twinning agreement.

The French guests arrive in Penicuik on Saturday August 16 when they will attend an informal gathering in the town hall, which will feature an exhibition of the ties between the two towns.

Festival sights

In the evening, there will be a social event in the West Street Hall.

On Sunday, there will be a coastal tour of the Forth followed by a visit to Edinburgh when the guests and their hosts can take in the sights and sounds of the Festival.

Sir Robert Clerk will greet the French visitors at Penicuik House on Monday August 18 where he will explain the ongoing renovation work of the ruin.

This will be followed by a visit to the new Penicuik Centre, which incorporates the local library, swimming pool and leisure centre.

Napoleonic War

In the afternoon, Provost Adam Montgomery will welcome the twinning party to Midlothian House.

Thereafter there will be a visit to Glenkinchie Distillery at Pencaitland, and in the evening there will be a Midlothian Twinning Association ceilidh in Penicuik North Kirk.

On Tuesday August 19, if the weather holds, there will be a visit to local places of interest including Roslin Glen along the walkway from Valleyfield where there is the memorial to the French prisoners from the Napoleonic War.

In the evening, the guests will visit the Edinburgh Tattoo.

The penultimate day of the visit, Wednesday August 20, is planned as a free day with the evening spent with the host families. The twinning party returns to the south of France on Thursday, August 21.

A party from Penicuik will be visiting L'Isle sur la Sorgue in October.
