Give rugby a try, says Midlothian rugby development officer

James Sloggie has been appointed Rugby Development Officer with Midlothian Council, to help get more young players into the game from the local area.

A NEW rugby development officer has started at Midlothian Council in partnership with Scottish Rugby.

James Sloggie (25) is all ready a well-know face in Scottish rugby after playing for Peebles and representative rugby in the Borders.

Following a back injury, the young rugby player decided to take up coaching with an emphasis on rugby development.

And in his new job he hopes to encourage more young people to take up the game.

The rugby fanatic also brings a wealth of experience, after working as a rugby development officer with Moray Council.

Speaking about his new challenge, James said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to get out into Midlothian and promote rugby as a great sport to all age groups.

“I’ll be working closely with all three clubs in Midlothian, alongside Lasswade Rugby Club Development officer Jack Forrester and our two modern apprentices.

“It’s an exciting job, and my aim is to provide not only as many local opportunities to play, but also for coaches to develop and practice their skills.

“These aims will benefit club players by supplementing the skills they are already learning within their clubs.

“I’m really looking forward to getting out there and see potential rugby stars of the future.”

Councillor Bob Constable (SNP), Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure, said: “I look forward to working with James and welcome him to the council.

“It’s important that rugby as a sport is recognised along with football and I’m sure his appointment will be a great asset to the sport.”

There are currently three rugby clubs in Midlothian – Dalkeith, Penicuik and Lasswade. All are open to players of any age and ability.
