Gorebridge murder trial begins

BITTER gang rivalry among two Midlothian communities led to the murder of a Mayfield teenager, a jury has been told.

Brian McHale (21) appeared before the High Court in Edinburgh this week charged with the murder of 17-year-old Dale Bennett.

One witness broke down in tears as he described the events leading to the teenager’s death.

McHale (21), described as a detainee at Polmont Young Offenders’ Institution, pleaded guilty to the culpable homicide of Mr Bennett at Newbyres Crescent, Gorebridge, on February 12 last year.

This plea was not accepted by the Crown, which alleges that the accused seized Mr Bennett by the body, struck him with a knife and murdered him.

McHale lodged pleas of not guilty to the murder charge and to two further offences in Newbyres Crescent.
